Chapter One page 5

Autumn Provides

Matthew is still thinking back to the events that landed him into his current situation.
Two and a half weeks later, Autumn appearance was shocking to the town’s people. She showed up to the store shop begging for food. The store owner was just about to kick the ghastly looking kid out of his establishment, when he recognized her voice. “Please Mr. Beaumont, may I have a little bread?” Then she fainted.

Dumbfounded Mr. Beaumont stood there in shock, as he stared at this awful looking creature laying on his floor.
“Mr. Beaumont, for heaven’s sake pick up that poor child.” Shouted Mrs. Allister. He was astounded by Autumn’s appearance and could not move an inch. Mr. Beaumont’s patron, Mrs. Allister, picked up the kid and walked outside of the store. She placed Autumn on her lap, as she sat in the rocking chair on the front store porch. “Fetch me a piece of bread and water!” “Uhh…NOW!!”  Snapping out of it, Mr. Beaumont ran inside tore off a piece of the loaf, grabbed a cup of water.
Matthew walked up to the store to see nosy Mrs. Allister, cuddling and feeding, the scrawny little beast.  Without warning he bitterly grabbed Autumn by the arm causing the half eaten bread and goblet of water to fall on the wooden porch.

Matthew recalled, that was the same day he met with the devil that took away his ability to speak, walk, and work.

Chapter One page 4
Autumn Provides

Autumn's father Matthew, reminisced  back to the day when he first loathed his offspring. His wife standing there with such contempt as she told him that he was not the father of their 13 year old daughter. His wife Barrelle, picked up her valise and left with her adulterer. Never to be seen since that heart retching day. Two years later Matthew was still numb. He never looked at his daughter, and went thru the motions of living. That all changed the day he finally noticed that Autumn had lost the features that hid her mother. When did Autumn become this woman whose beauty and form had the men in their region staring at her profusely, and bumping into each other? Why did she have to look so much like her whore of a mother. Remembering this was not his child, Matthew’s hatred arose and grew more and more as the days passed. Matthew began to drink whiskey heavily to blot out his disdain for the non-sire he was raising.  However, it was to no avail. He would come home from work and curse and belittle poor Autumn. He consciously made the decision to stop bringing home food for his daughter to eat. He ate at the saloons or with some of the women he would visit.

Chapter One page 3
Autumn Provides

Blaze walked over to Matthew squatting so that he and she were eye to eye. “It’s your choice as to how long you stay in this position,” she whispered. Matthew’s piercing stare gave Blaze her answer. Standing and crossing her arms Blaze said aloud, “You’re not very bright are you? Open your eyes you imbecile.” Matthew’s stare became even more menacing. Giving up Blaze turned and smiled at Autumn she motioned for the two to sit on the couch. Their long talk went well into the night.
Three months went by and Autumn blossomed. No longer did she looked frail and dirty. Her pale cheeks had resumed its rosy color, her shoulder length brunette hair was clean and shiny, the scrawny body was replaced with a figure that turned heads.
She wore clean dresses that her new “mom” had made. The breakfast that Blaze had made filled the air with the aroma of sweet bread, molasses, and a peeled naval orange. Autumn stared at her mom, who was washing the dishes. Autumn was taken aback by her beauty. Blaze had hair as black as tar that shined and shimmered like the stars. Her violet colored oval shaped eyes were mesmerizing. She possessed flawless brown skin that came into contrast but somehow complemented her full purple lips. Blaze’s high cheek bones were the distinguishing point of her beauty. I love my beautiful new mom, she thought.

Autumn took a bite of her sweet bread before asking, “Mom, what is your real name?” “I am Blaze, my darling little one.”  “How can that be?” “Blaze is the fiery lady who helped me.” “I am she, she is me we are one.” answered Blaze. “Oh I see,” replied Autumn, but she really didn't see. Autumn drank her glass of milk after she had consumed her meal. She made a quick trip to the washroom before kissing Blaze’s cheek. Autumn waved goodbye to her father. Matthew’s ominous stare no longer frightened Autumn. She had developed a profound pity for her mean spirited father instead.

Her father Matthew, sat unable to speak or move, hated his daughter.  He could not understand why she looks at him with pity and believe it or not, with love.  How could Autumn love him after the horrible way he had treated her? He pushed that thought in the back of his mind, and summoned his hatred to surface once more.
